Bengaluru, Dec 31: The hurried cremation of a woman has proved costly for her husband and his mother, who have been denied bail by the high court.

Refusing bail to Bharatesh and his mother Sunanda, the court said the unnecessary urgency in cremating the body, before the arrival of the woman’s parents, gave rise to questions to which the mother-son duo had no answers.

The court noted that the distance between Halaga in Belagavi, where Anitha’s parents lived, and her matrimonial home at Terdal village in Bagalkot, is 40km and the travel time between the two places is about two hours 36 minutes.

Justice NK Sudhindra Rao said Anitha was married only four years ago and allegations that the mother and son used a sari to strangle her to death cannot be brushed aside. Bharatesh and Sunanda had claimed Anitha’s body was cremated as per customs prevailing in the community. It was also contended that the bail could be granted as the probe was completed. However, opposing the bail, the government pleader contended the mother and son strangled Anitha to death and to destroy evidence and escape punishment, they cremated her.

Declining to consider the contentions put forward by the petitioners, Justice Rao also pointed out that except some inputs regarding holding a panchayat meeting to settle the dispute between the husband and wife, there are no details forthcoming on whether Anitha was unwell, nor any explanation as to why they did not approach a hospital while she was alive.

The couple has a girl child named Bhoomika.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
