Tumakuru, Jan 5: In its bid to boost organic farming and providing nutritional food to the poor, Karnataka government is planning to introduce millet based meal in government schools and subsidised Indira Canteens in the State, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara today said.
Speaking at the district-level Organic and Millets Mela being held here on Saturday he advocated that school children needed nutritious food and the government had been considering including millet food once a week mid-day meals. This will also encourage farmers who are into organic farming.
He said there was a need to set up millet processing units in every taluk in the wake of fertile land is becoming fallow due to extensive use of chemical fertilisers and insecticides for past decades.
Noticing this, the government introduced organic farming policy in 2014 and has initiated many programmes to encourage the farmers who grow organic millet crops using organic manure, he said.
