Bengaluru, Aug 8: Karnataka is observing mourning as a mark of respect to veteran politician and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who died in a Hospital at Chennai yesterday.

The Karnataka State government has declared one day mourning and has cancelled all official programmes. National flag has been ordered to fly half-mast at Vidhana Soudha, the State Secretariat and in other Government Offices.

Describing the DMK patriarch as ‘a living legend’, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said that he strove for the development of Tamil Nadu throughout his life and built a stronghold for the regional party DMK.

“I had met him several times. Every time he made me understand the importance of regional parties. The popular schemes he implemented for the downtrodden are replicated in various States today,” he said, adding that DMK was a prominent coalition partner during the period of the H.D. Deve Gowda-led government at the Centre.

Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda said that the country had lost a visionary leader in Karunanidhi’s death.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, president, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), in a tweet described Karunanidhi as ‘a true inheritor of the Dravidian movement’ who also played a significant role at the national level.

Recalling the support extended by Karunanidhi in installing a statue of 12th century saint-poet Sarvajna in Chennai, State BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa said Karunanidhi played an important role in creating harmony between the people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu with this gesture.

When the statue of Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar was unveiled near Ulsoor in a similar gesture in 2009, Karunanidhi was present in Bengaluru. He had said the unveiling of Thiruvalluvar’s statue here and that of Sarvajna in Chennai scheduled was “a fine example of cooperation between States in India.... We have created avenues for cooperation between the two States.”

Speaking of Sarvajna, he had said, “Sarvajna belonged to an oppressed community and his work reflected his progressive ideals. That is why he finds a place in the hearts of the people of both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.”

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) cancelled its services to Tamil Nadu on Tuesday night. The decision was taken based on an advisory by our counterparts in Tamil Nadu, an official said.

KSRTC operates 432 buses to various parts of Tamil Nadu daily, of which 87 are Chennai-bound operations. “Service will resume once we hear from the Tamil Nadu transport authorities,” a KSRTC official said.

Buses operated on Tuesday will remain in Tamil Nadu with police protection. Buses to Kerala are being operated via Mysuru, and operations via Salem have been stopped. About 150-160 night buses have been stopped, officials said. However, private vehicles are being allowed to cross borders.

The district police have stepped up security along the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border as a precautionary measure.

Security cover has been provided to Karunanidhi’s daughter’s house in Byappanahalli in Bengaluru.

T.P. Shivakumar, Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru district, has advised all DSPs to deploy additional police personnel. “Security has been strengthened not just along border areas but also in localities where Tamilians are staying in large numbers,” said a senior police officer.

Another senior police officer said that all liquor shops near the border areas were asked to down shutters. “The situation is peaceful in rural areas. We have also spoken to our counterparts in Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu,” the official added.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.
