Bengaluru, Jun 15: The Home Department has finally decided to do away with the orderly system, which sees constables carrying out menial jobs in homes of police officers.
The long pending demand had gained steam when police constables threatened to go on mass leave on June 4 over poor service benefits.
After a meeting with senior police officers in Bengaluru, Parameshwara said the orderly system will be done away with in a phased manner. The department is yet to decide on a name for the proposed new recruits. They might either be called followers' or dalayats'. All these years constables were serving as orderlies.
There is no fixed time frame, but the transition will happen in a phased manner, starting from Bengaluru city, he added. The minister said that there are around 2,500 orderlies in the state.
Salaries
To address the demand for raise in salaries, a five-member committee has been constituted. It has been asked to submit a report in four week's time. The department will also propose to the government to increase the salaries of constables.
The basic pay of a constable is on a par with a second division assistant, though their nature of work cannot be compared, he said. The department will be evolving a general policy to consider risk allowance' to all personnel in the department.
The department will reiterate to the Election Commission of India to pay election allowance to police constables on a par with other officials on poll duty. Parameshwara said
constables are being paid 50% lesser allowance than other officials.
