Karnataka waives 10 lakh farmers’ loans in 30 days

Bengaluru, Feb 27: Facing flak from the opposition BJP in general and from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular over the slow pace of writing off farm loans, the government has accelerated the process, so much so that over 10 lakh farmers have benefited from the scheme in less than a month.

Data shows the JD(S)-Congress government has released Rs 4,163 crore towards the farm loan waiver scheme, benefiting 10.4 lakh farmers, till February 26. The government has so far released Rs 2,363 crore to 6.4 lakh commercial bank accounts and Rs 1,800 crore to accounts of 4 lakh farmers in cooperative banks.

“After identifying beneficiaries through the specially developed software, the seventh list of beneficiaries was released on Tuesday,” said Munish Moudgil, Commissioner, Survey and Settlements and Land Records. “The implementation of the (crop loan waiver) scheme is being accelerated with an aim to cover all eligible crop loans in co-operative institutions and commercial banks at the earliest.”

The scheme was a key electoral promise made by chief minister HD Kumaraswamyin the run up to last year’s assembly election. The opposition BJP has been accusing the JD(S)-Congress government of betraying farmers, saying the benefit had reached only a handful.

Taking advantage of the delay in rolling out the scheme, Modi has been taunting the government and accused the Congress of misleading farmers on loan waiver promises. He said the government is offering “lollipops”. Asked why he described the announcements as “lollipops”, the PM said: “To say a lie and mislead, that is what I call a lollipop.”

Responding to the charge, Kumaraswamy said, “Waiving crop loans is a commitment our coalition government made to farmers of the state to safeguard their interests.”

Although the scheme was announced in July last year, there was inordinate delay in releasing funds as farmers had taken loans from different sources (cooperative banks, public sector banks and private banks) and software had to be developed to identify genuine beneficiaries. The demand for early implementation also mounted pressure on the ruling JD(S)-Congress coalition, especially after Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh also announced similar schemes.

“Earlier, there were problems regarding verification of Aadhaar and ration cards,” Mallesh, a farmer leader, said. “The issue led to the delay. That was sorted out. But now bankers are proving to be a stumbling block for farmers since they are not making it easy to submit details.”

Loans waived as on Feb 26

* Commercial banks: 6.4 lakh farmers Rs 2,363 crore

* Cooperative banks: 4 lakh farmers Rs 1,800 crore

* Total: 10.4 lakh farmers, Rs 4,163 crore.

* North Karnataka districts will get a major chunk of Rs 46,753 crore being spent for farm loans.

* Rs 29,190 crore will be spent on 12 northern districts

* Old Mysuru, comprising 12 districts, will get Rs 12,073 crore

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
