Udupi, Nov 1: The Karnataka government will be appointing medical officers and related personnel in the state in the next eight months, assured health and family welfare minister U T Khader.

He said that as many as 983 specialists, 321 medical officers, 87 dental doctors, 3,000 nurses, lab technicians, C and D Group paramedicals would be appointed in the next eight months. There was a 50 per cent shortage of medical officers in the State.
He said that the government would be starting Generic Medicine Stores and 24x7 pharmacies in all district and taluk headquarters. The idea behind starting the Generic Medicine Stores was to provide medicines at low rates to the patients. These stores would be established in the premises of the government hospitals.
The government would ensure that over 1,000 generic medicines were available at these stores at 60 per cent concessional rates. The 24x7 government pharmacies would sell medicines at 20 per cent cheaper prices. This would also put an end to the practice of doctors giving prescriptions for medicines (to the patients) to be purchased outside government hospitals.
