Kasaragod, May 15: The over two-month-long campaign for the Assembly election ended in the district on Saturday evening with major political parties taking out colourful processions to showcase their strength.
In sharp contrast from the past, the campaign marked the strong presence of BJP-led NDA which has embarked on a vigorous electioneering in a bid to make its maiden entry to the State Assembly from the northern border district.
The main campaign issue of the major political alliances has been the stagnated development of the district.
The LDF and the UDF all through the electioneering exuded the confidence of getting a clean sweep from all the five Assembly segments in the district. The BJP blamed the successive governance over six decades by the rival fronts as the sole reason for the backwardness of the region.
The intense summer heat indeed affected the public turnout at several election meetings. However, the meeting addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here on May 8 saw the public turning up in large numbers.
The campaigning that picked up momentum over the last one month also saw the visit to the district by national leaders including senior Congress leader A.K. Antony and CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat.
Besides, a number of leaders from the State including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan addressed a series of election meetings in the district.
