Kasargod, Mar 24: A young Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was arrested in connection with the alleged suicide of a 20-year-old girl.
Sunil Chandran, 22, a native of Kotakunnu near Pallikkare in the district, and posted in a BSF battalion in West Bengal, was arrested on Saturday by T P Dayanandan, sub-inspector, Adur police station, charging him with abetting the suicide of Razina, who was found dead in a well near her house at Muliyar on March 11, police sources said.
His friend, a student of the same college, had chanced to use the former 's mobile phone to ring up Razina to clear some doubts.
Making use of the cell phone number, Sunil Chandran got closer to the girl in a short span of time and the jawan is said to have met the girl at her house recently, Mr Dayanandan said.
The arrest was made after verifying an SMS sent to him by Razina about her move to commit suicide in the early hours of March 9, he said.
The body of the girl-who went missing from her house on March 10-was found in the well on March 11. Efforts were on to verify the details of calls made by the duo over the last few days to establish the involvement of the youth in the girl 's death.
The BSF jawan, against whom a case was registered under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide), was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court II in Kanhangad on Sunday, and he was released on bail, the police official said.
