Udupi, Aug 21: The Pejawar Mutt performed the ‘Kattige Muhurta,’ the third of the preliminaries before the next Paryaya festival, here on Friday. Elaborate rituals marked the event.
Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Pejawar Mutt will be ascending the ‘Paryaya Peetha’ also called the ‘Sarvajna Peetha’ at the 800-year-old Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple, on January 18, 2016. It will be his fifth Paryaya.
The 84-year-old seer is expected to create history as no seer of the Ashta Mutts (or eight mutts) of Udupi has ascended the Paryaya Peetha for the fifth time ever since the biennial Paryaya system was introduced in 1522 A.D.
As part of the Kattige Muhurta, a procession of devotees and priests began from the Pejawar Mutt at 7 a.m. They visited the Sri Chandramouleshwara Temple, the Ananteshwara Temple and then the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple and also the Vrindavana and goshala of the temple, where they offered prayers.
The procession then returned to the Pejawar Mutt. After offering prayers at the mutt, the procession of devotees, with some carrying the firewood on their heads, along with the priests began from the Pejawar Mutt.
They reached the place marked for making the firewood chariot or ‘Kattige Ratha’ near Madhwa Sarovara pond, where they placed the firewood and offered prayers.
Donations were given to the representatives of other mutts and temples on the occasion. The rituals were conducted by priest Chitrapur Gopalakrishna Acharya.
After offering prayers and laying the foundation for building a firewood chariot, the procession returned to the Pejawar Mutt.
It would take about a month for the firewood to be arranged in the form of a chariot. Hence, it is called ‘Kattige Ratha’.
A ‘shikara’ would be installed atop this ‘Kattige Ratha’ during the ‘Bhatta Muhurta’, the fourth and the last of the major preliminaries, to be held a couple of months before the Paryaya festival.
