Kejriwal calls MLAs’ meet as AAP plunges into turmoil

New Delhi, Apr 27: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in turmoil after losing the Delhi civic polls.

Since yesterday, party members have quit from their posts, former party members have penned tirades and still other party members have chastised the top leadership for not leading from the front.

A chagrined AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal today called a meeting of all legislators at his residence, even as news broke that the party's Punjab unit in-charge Sanjay Singh and organisation-building head Durgesh Pathak resigned from their respective posts.

Their offers to resign come on top of the resignation yesterday of AAP's Delhi unit chief Dilip Pandey from his post and of legislator Alka Lamba, who took responsibility for AAP's sorry defeat.

AAP came in second behind the BJP, after yesterday's counting of Sunday's civic polls vote. It won a mere 48 of 270 seats. By comparison, the BJP won a whopping 181 seats.

Sanjay Singh said on Twitter: "I have handed over my resignation from the post of in-charge to party national president Arvind Kejriwal. Durgesh has also resigned from his post"

Yesterday, Alka Lamba also tweeted that she would like to resign from her post. ""I take full responsibility for the loss in three wards and resign from all my party posts including that of legislator," she said.

She later tried to quell rumours of discord in the party.

AAP members meanwhile blamed "tampered with" Electronic Voting Machines(EVM) for the party's defeat.

"This is not a (Narendra) Modi wave, this is an EVM wave. This is the same wave that they (BJP) used in the Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab polls," said AAP leader Gopal Rai yesterday.

Not all party members or former party members thought EVMs were to blame. They blamed AAP chief Kejriwal's style of functioning.

The party's MP from Pinjab Bhagwant Mann told TOI it is wrong to blame EVMs for AAP's defeat.

"Instead of finding faults with EVMs, it is time to start finding faults in the party," he said.

A former AAP colleague and admirer of Kejriwal blamed the Delhi chief minister's "hunger for power" and his promotion of a cult of personality for the crushing defeats the party has been experiencing in various elections lately.

Before losing in the MCD civic polls, an AAP candidate lost his deposit in a Delhi bypoll. And before that, AAP performed miserably in the Assembly elections in Punjab and Goa.

"(You have)...become so vicious and ugly because of (your) hunger for power", wrote Mayank Gandhi, the former chief of AAP's Maharashtra unit, in an open letter to Kejriwal, ahead of the start of counting in the Delhi civic polls, which surveys showed the BJP was winning.

The reasons for this "hunger for power" on Kejriwal's part was his "ambition to become a PM in 2019", said Gandhi. That's also the reason for the latest of AAP's string of electoral defeats, Gandhi said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II in Amman, during which the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, with the Prime Minister outlining an eight-point vision covering key areas of cooperation.

Describing the meeting as “productive”, PM Modi said he shared a roadmap focused on trade and economy, fertilisers and agriculture, information technology, healthcare, infrastructure, critical and strategic minerals, civil nuclear cooperation, and people-to-people ties.

In a post on social media platform X, the Prime Minister praised King Abdullah II’s personal commitment to advancing India–Jordan relations, particularly as both countries mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties this year.

“Held productive discussions with His Majesty King Abdullah II in Amman. His personal commitment towards vibrant India-Jordan relations is noteworthy. This year, we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of our bilateral diplomatic relations,” PM Modi said.

The meeting took place at the Al Husseiniya Palace, where the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both sides agreed to further deepen cooperation in areas including trade and investment, defence and security, counter-terrorism and de-radicalisation, fertilisers and agriculture, infrastructure, renewable energy, tourism, and heritage.

The MEA said both leaders reaffirmed their united stand against terrorism.

PM Modi arrived in Amman earlier on Monday and was received by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, who accorded him a formal welcome. Following the talks, King Abdullah II hosted a banquet dinner in honour of the Prime Minister, reflecting the warmth of bilateral ties.

Jordan is the first leg of PM Modi’s three-nation tour. From Amman, the Prime Minister will travel to Ethiopia at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, marking his first official visit to the African nation. The tour will conclude with a visit to Oman.
