Kejriwal writes to DU VC on Modi's degree

May 5, 2016

New Delhi, May 5: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today wrote to the Delhi University vice chancellor on the issue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree, demanding that it be put on the varsity's website as truth should emerge on a matter of "grave concern".

Kejriwal's missive to Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi came a day after he accused DU of "refusing" to show Modi's degree as he "never graduated" from it.

A delegation of AAP leaders had yesterday visited the university to seek a copy of the degree and later claimed they were "turned away".

In his letter, Kejriwal said the primary question was whether the Prime Minister had done his BA from DU or not.

He went on to claim that the university's records do not contain Modi's admission form, marksheet, or any other information about his degree.

"It is a matter of grave concern since the Gujarat University says that he (Modi) has done his Masters from there. If he has not pursued BA, then how could he secure admission in MA? This gives rise to suspicions that the MA degree is forged," Kejriwal wrote.

Referring to reports that the documents are not in safe custody, the AAP chief urged the VC to take steps to secure them and upload them on website.

"One English daily has reported that his degree is not secure and an accident may happen. This gives rise to another suspicion as to whether a ground for an accident is being prepared then?

"I urge you to take steps for these documents to be secured. It will be better if these documents are put online. Do the people of this country have the right to know the education qualifications of their PM? If there are serious allegations concerning his degree then the truth should emerge," Kejriwal said.

No evidence Modi was awarded a BA degree by DU: AAP

Giving a fresh twist to the controversy over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BA degree, the Aam Aadmi Party today alleged that a degree obtained by a namesake of him has been shown as as his own, which Arvind Kejriwal said amounted to outright \cheating\".

Kejriwal told a press conference that he can assert with \"full responsibility\" that Delhi University's records have no mention of \"Narendra Damodardas Modi\" and that one \"Narendra Kumar Mahavir Prasad Modi\" had taken admission in 1975.

The Delhi Chief Minister, who have been demanding that Modi's degrees be placed in public domain, said the issue was not whether the PM was \"10th pass or 12th pass\" but that he has furnished \"fake\" certificates and \"cheated\" the people of the country.

\"You don't need any degree to become PM. Talent is not necessarily a product of formal education. A person with less formal education can also be extremely talented, take for example Anna Hazare.

\"Firstly he lied in front of the country, secondly he lied in his affidavit and thirdly the degree that is emerging is forged. This is a case of cheating. If there are charges of cheating against a person like PM, then it is a grave matter,\" Kejriwal said.

Kerjriwal claimed that AAP volunteers have conducted \"searches\" across departments of DU, even in school of open learning, but did not come across Modi's enrollment form or degree.

\"I started saying with full responsibility that DU does not have his records only then. We came across one Modi who took admission in 1975 and is a resident of Alwar, His date of birth is 1958 whereas our PM's date of birth is 1950,\" the AAP chief said.

Meanwhile, the alleged \"Narendra Kumar Mahavir Prasad Modi\", allegedly a resident of Alwar, told reporters that he took admission in Shri Ram College of Commerce in 1975.

\"I am thankful to my father for giving me such a nice name as it is famous across the world now,\" he said.

AAP leaders Ashutsoh and Sanjay Singh have also filed an RTI with Delhi University seeking copy of Modi's application form, copy of enrollment form in Modi's handwriting, copy of relevant register, copy of his marksheet of each year, copy of convocation list of 1979 and announcement list during convocation.

In a separate presser, AAP leader Ashish Khetan said this was for the first time that any Prime Minister's academic qualification was under the scanner.

Khetan said Modi should be dealt with in a way similar to former AAP Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar was treated. Tomar was a Law Minister who was sacked over fake degree allegations and arrested.

\"Police should take him to Delhi University and ask him to show the hall in which he appeared for exams. Everyone is equal before law. They should also follow a similar procedure the way it was adopted in the case of Tomar,\" Khetan said.

\"Our investigations show that the degree is fake. This is a very serious crime and amounts to forgery,\" party leader Ashutosh said, adding that they also fear that the varsity records could be tampered with."

Mangaluru, Dec 16: The Mangaluru City police have significantly escalated their campaign against drug trafficking, arresting 25 individuals and booking 12 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act between November 30 and December 13. The crackdown resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including 685.6 grams of MDMA and 1.5 kg of ganja.

The success of this recent drive has been significantly boosted by the city’s innovative, QR code-based anonymous reporting system.

"The anonymous reporting system has received an encouraging response. Several recent arrests were made based on inputs received through this system, helping police tighten the noose around drug peddlers," said the City Police Commissioner.

The latest arrests contribute to a robust year-to-date record, underscoring the police's relentless commitment to combating the drug menace.

Up to December 14 this year, the police have registered a total of 107 cases of drug peddling, leading to the arrest of 219 peddlers. Furthermore, they have booked 562 cases of drug consumption, resulting in the arrest of 671 individuals.

The scale of the seizure for the year reflects the magnitude of the problem being tackled: police have seized 320.6 kg of ganja worth ₹88.7 lakh and 1.4 kg of MDMA valued at ₹1.2 crore. Other significant seizures include hydro-weed ganja worth ₹94.7 lakh and cocaine worth ₹1.9 lakh, among others.

The Commissioner emphasized a policy of rigorous enforcement: "We ensure that peddlers are caught red-handed so that they cannot later dispute the case or claim innocence."

To counter the rising trend of substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City police have rolled out uniform guidelines for random drug testing across educational institutions.

As part of the drive, tests were conducted in approximately 100 institutions, screening an estimated 5,500 to 6,000 students in the first phase. 20 students tested positive for drug consumption during the initial screening.

Students who tested positive have been provided counselling and are scheduled for re-testing in the second quarter. The testing will also be expanded to students not covered in the first phase. In a move to ensure strict implementation, police personnel were deployed in mufti in some institutions. Reiterating a zero-tolerance stance, the Commissioner confirmed that random testing will continue, and colleges have also been instructed to conduct drug tests at the time of admission to deter substance abuse from an early stage.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
