Bengaluru, Jul 13: Calling DySP Kallappa Handibag, who committed suicide after his role in kidnap case of a youth for ransom came to light, “an honest” officer JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said in the legislative assembly that the government made him a scapegoat in the betting case.

Mr Kumarswamy sought chief minister Siddaramaiah's intervention for giving compensation to widow of Handibag, who hung himself at his father-in-law's house in Belagavi on July 5. The main accused in the kidnap case, Praveen Khandya a Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader has already been arrested by the police.
"I agree she is the wife of a tainted cop but still the government should extend the family some help on humanitarian grounds since they are living in extreme poverty," he added.
“Handibag was an honest officer. Those involved in betting used him. Instead of taking action against the mafia and protecting the officer, the government suspended him. Unable to bear the insult, Handibag ended his life,” he argued.
“The family will not get Handibag's service benefits as the government has made him an accused,” Mr Kumaraswamy said.
The Chief Minister should ensure cases against him are withdrawn and help his family, he added.
What if Mohan commits suicide?
Kumaraswamy said the Chief Minister was vindictive as he took action against police inspector G N Mohan, who had filed a case against Siddaramaiah's son Rakesh in 2013.
The case against Siddaramaiah's son was filed on the directions of then police commissioner of Mysuru.
In the Council, K?T?Srikante Gowda (JD-S) asked, “Why are you harassing Mohan? What if he too commits suicide?”
Home Minister Parameshwara denied there was interference in the service matter of Mohan.

While police believe that six or more persons would have helped the accused in this act, the DySP in question did not report for duty after the complaint, nor was he available for contact, it is learnt.
