Chikkamagaluru, Nov 18: A ferocious tiger which has been terrorizing villagers in Chikkamagaluru district was finally captured by the Forest Department personnel on Monday at Pandaravalli in the Bababudangiri range at the foot of Chandradrona hills.

The tiger had attacked and killed a woman near Pandrolli village around 25 km from Chikkamagaluru on Saturday morning. The deceased, Sumitra Anand (35) – a labourer, was heading to a coffee estate for her daily work when the tiger, seated on a boulder, attacker her from behind and dragged her down a small hillock, around 200 metres from the attack site, forest department officials said.

The department began the operation to capture the animal in the morning and Dr Sanath, the tranquilisation expert of the Bhadra wildlife division. The tiger had mauled two cattle to death at the same spot.

The Forest officials, Wildlife Board member George Machan and Dr Sanath waited there since Sunday evening, anticipating that the tiger would come there to devour the leftover flesh of the cattle. At 7.30 pm, the tiger was found at a nearby farm.

As it emerged out after some time, Sanath shot a tranquiliser at the big cat. But it missed the target.

At 4 pm on Monday, the Forest personnel kept the leftover flesh in a cage as bait. As the big cat approached the cage, they fired a tranquilizer again at the tiger. After a few seconds, the big cat fell down unconscious.

Later, another dart was fired at the big cat. This time, it was the drug to bring the animal back to its senses.

The Bhadra wildlife division officials have now decided to relocate the tiger to the Bannerghatta Biological Park. Residents in the region heaved a sigh of relief following the capture of the tiger.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
