New Delhi, Jul 20: Ram Nath Kovind was on Thursday elected as the 14th President of India becoming the first BJP leader and one with RSS background to occupy the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Backed by 40 political parties, Kovind, 71, defeated the joint opposition candidate Meira Kumar in a straight fight by polling 65.65% votes with a vote value of 7,02,044. Kumar got the balance 34.35% votes with a value of 3,67,314.

Kovind will be sworn in as the 14th President of India on July 25 at a ceremony in Parliament. Chief Justice of India J S Khehar will administer the oath of office to Kovind.

Kovind received overwhelming support from across the country with his poll managers claiming to have secured 116 more votes than they had anticipated.

Of the total 4896 lawmakers eligible to cast their votes, 4851 exercised their franchise. Of these, Kovind polled 2930 votes against 1844 garnered by Kumar. As many as 77 votes were found to be invalid.

Kovind will be the second Dalit leader to occupy the top constitutional post after K R Narayanan.

The presidential election was seen as a battle of index for opposition unity as 18 parties had joined hands to take on the BJP-led NDA. It also brought out the faultlines in the opposition ranks as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar broke ranks to vote in favour of Kovind.

Amid claims of cross-voting by the BJP, Congress leaders asserted that the opposition unity forged for the presidential election had stayed intact and Kumar had in fact polled more votes than expected in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

An analysis of the result showed that Kovind had benefited by cross-voting by Congress MLAs in Gujarat, Goa and Chhatisgarh. Kovind also managed to get more votes than anticipated in several states including Maharashtra, Tripura, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam.

“I never aspired to be the President. My win is a message to those discharging their duties with integrity. My election as the President is an evidence of the greatness of Indian democracy" an emotional Kovind told reporters shortly after the election results were declared.

“My best wishes to Kovindji. It has fallen upon him to uphold the Constitution in letter and spirit in these challenging times,” Meira Kumar said.

Congratulations poured in from across the country with President Pranab Mukherjee being among the first to extend best wishes to Kovind on being elected as his successor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi drove the Kovind's residence on 10, Akbar Road to greet him on his election.

“Congratulations to Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji on being elected the President of India! Best wishes for a fruitful & inspiring tenure,” Modi said.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi also congratulated the President-elect. “The President of India enjoys a unique position as defender and protector of the Constitution, upholder of democratic traditions and as supreme commander of the Indian Armed Forces. The President is the conscience keeper of the Constitution of India,” she said.

Congress workers protested outside the home of Nilesh Kumbhani, the party's candidate from Gujarat's Surat Lok Sabha seat whose nomination form was rejected due to alleged discrepancies, as he was likely to join the BJP, sources said on Tuesday.

The protest came a day after the BJP's Mukesh Dalal was declared the winner from the party stronghold following the withdrawal of all the other eight candidates in the fray.

The sources said that the protesters called Kumbhani a "traitor" and "killer of democracy", adding that he could join the BJP as early as this week.

Kumbhani's nomination form was rejected after he was unable to present even one of his three proposers before Returning Officer Sourabh Pardhi.

The BJP had raised questions about the discrepancies in the signatures of three proposers in his nomination form.

The nomination form of Suresh Padsala, the Congress' substitute candidate from Surat, was also invalidated, pushing the party out of the poll fray in the BJP stronghold.

In his order, Pardhi said the four nomination forms submitted by Kumbhani and Padsala were rejected because at first sight, discrepancies were found in the signatures of the proposers, and they did not appear genuine.

The Lok Sabha elections in the Surat seat was supposed to take place on May 7.

In yet another setback to the Congress party amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, its candidate from Indore Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his nomination on Monday, April 29, days before voting.

Interestingly, he had reached the Collector's office with BJP MLA Ramesh Mendola to withdraw his nomination. He also reportedly joined BJP.

Senior BJP leader and state cabinet minister Kailash Vijayvargiya in a post on X said Bam was welcome to join the BJP.

"Congress Lok Sabha candidate from Indore Akshay Kanti Bam is welcome in the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party national president J P Nadda, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and state president VD Sharma," he said in the post.

The Congress had fielded Bam against sitting BJP MP Shankar Lalwani from the Indore Lok Sabha seat, where polling will be held on May 13.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Friday, said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to reintroduce electoral bonds in some capacity following extensive consultations with all stakeholders, should it come back to power in the 2024 general elections, according to a report in the Hindustan Times (HT).

HT cited Nirmala Sitharam as saying, “We still have to do a lot of consultation with stakeholders and see what is it that we have to do to make or bring in a framework which will be acceptable to all, primarily retain the level of transparency and completely remove the possibility of black money entering into this.”

However, the Centre has not yet decided whether to seek a review of the ruling made by the Supreme Court (SC), she said.

She further added, “What the scheme, which has been just thrown out by the Supreme Court, brought in was transparency. What prevailed earlier was just free-for-all.”

Launched in 2018, electoral bonds were accessible for acquisition at any State Bank of India (SBI) branch. Contributions made through this programme by corporations and even foreign entities via Indian subsidiaries received full tax exemption, while the identities of the donors remained confidential, safeguarded by both the bank and the recipient political parties.

On February 15, a five-judge Constitution Bench struck down the scheme, deeming it ‘unconstitutional’ due to its complete anonymisation of contributions to political parties. Additionally, the Bench stated that the articulated objectives of curbing black money or illegal election financing did not warrant disproportionately infringing upon voters’ right to information.

FM Sitharaman said, some aspects of the scheme need improvement and they will be brought back following consultations.

She also lashed out at the Opposition’s claims that the BJP disregarded criminal charges against leaders who switched from other parties to join the ruling party.

The HT quoted her as saying, “The BJP can’t sit here and say, you come to my party today, and the case will be closed tomorrow. The case has to go through the courts that have to take a call; they will not just say, “Oh, he’s come to your party, close the case.” Doesn’t happen that way. So is this washing machine a term they want to use for the courts?”

She further said that the Union government plans to simplify the process of taxation and make it easy for investments to come through into the country.
