Bengaluru, May 22: Congress will get the post of speaker and a deputy chief minister in Karnataka, the first names that party president Rahul Gandhi will decide in the coming hours ahead of HD Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in as chief minister of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government on Wednesday.

The two parties have moved a step ahead in resolving differences over power-sharing, with chief minister-designate H D Kumaraswamy agreeing to the above demands of the Grand Old Party.

The issue of the Speaker’s post was discussed during Kumaraswamy’s meeting with Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting with the Gandhis — that took place at Rahul’s 12, Tughlaq Road residence — was cordial, with Kumaraswamy touching Sonia’s feet as a gesture of gratitude for supporting the JD(S).

Though the leaders did not go into the nitty-gritty of government formation, Rahul asked Kumaraswamy to leave the post of the Speaker for the Congress. Kumaraswamy gave his consent.

“The Speaker will be from the Congress,” AICC general secretary and Karnataka in-charge K C Venugopal said after the meeting.

According to media reports, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda was insistent on having a JD(S) leader in the Speaker’s post, contending that it was necessary for the smooth functioning of the coalition government.

The Gandhis also conveyed to Kumaraswamy to let bygones be bygones and that the Congress was keen to have a “forward-looking” and “long-term relationship” with the JD(S). The Congress and the JD(S) had carried out a bitter campaign, with Rahul describing the regional outfit as the ‘B-Team’ of the BJP.

“We have not discussed any future course of action. I wanted to show my respect and regards to the Gandhi family. I requested their presence at the oath-taking ceremony,” Kumaraswamy told reporters after meeting the Gandhis.

The Congress announced that both Rahul and Sonia would be attending the oath-taking ceremony.

“Rahul ji cleared the modalities to be done, he has given permission to AICC general secretary K C Venugopal to discuss all those matters and to finalise everything. Local leaders and he will sit together tomorrow (Tuesday) to finalise things,” Kumaraswamy said.

In a whirlwind visit to the national capital, Kumaraswamy also met BSP supremo Mayawati and made a phone call to CPM general secretary to invite them for the oath-taking ceremony. Both the leaders have agreed to attend.

The swearing-in ceremony is all set to be a show of strength by the opposition as leaders from 22 states are expected to be present. Five Chief Ministers – Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), Pinarayi Vijayan (Kerala), N Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh), K Chandrashekhar Rao (Telangana) and Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi) are expected to attend the grand event. Kamal Haasan is also expected to the function.

Earlier in the afternoon, senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ashok Gehlot and Venugopal had a long meeting with the Congress president and briefed him about the situation in Karnataka.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
