Mangaluru, Mar 18: A female leopard, which strayed from the forest to a village, fell in to a well at Valavooru in Thumbe on the outskirts of the city, and later rescued by the officials of the Forest Department on Wednesday.

The leopard accidentally fell into the open well a farmland belonging to one Lingappa Poojary in the early hours of Wednesday.
According to local residents, the big cat must have fallen into the well while chasing dogs. Mr Poojary said that domestic dogs started barking at the leopard which intruded the farmland and swallowed a hen. Aangry leopard might have started chasing the dogs. However, it landed in the well.
Mr Poojary, after waking up in the morning noticed the strange behavior of the dog, which was continuously barking looking at the well. When he went near he saw the leopard.
He immediately informed the local Gram Panchayat President Mohammad Valavooru who in turn contacted the Forest Department, Police Department and fire fighters.
The rescue operation began after a couple of hours. The officials of forest department with the help of fire personnel spread a thick net around the well, fixed a cage to it and using a ladder pulled the leopard out.
The rescued leopard was shifted to Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula Nisargadhama at Vamanjoor near here.
