Kasargod, Nov 20: Two students of Standard X at Government Higher Secondary School, Hosdurg, here, have been arrested by police here in connection with the brutal murder of their classmate whose body was found in a water-filled pit last week.
A police team led by Kanhangad Deputy Superintendent of Police Harishchandra Naik arrested the two boys, aged 16 and 17, on the charge of murdering their classmate Abhilash (15) on November 14 on their way back from school.
They said they had left the school in an auto-rickshaw and got down at nearby Kushalnagar after another altercation on the issue.
Brutal murder
In the melee that followed, the victim was stabbed with a compass below the left eyelid, Mr. Naik said. Bleeding heavily, he rushed towards a nearby water-filled pit to wash the blood stains. However, the elder of the two accused pushed him into the water. When the victim tried to come out, the accused thrust his head into the water to ensure that he was dead. The younger accused tried to stop the attack, but was pushed into the pit. He, however, managed to escape, the police said.
The boys who were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court here were sent to the Juvenile Justice Home at Paravanadukkam, near Kasaragod, Mr. Naik said.
The development in the case comes in the wake of discrepancies in the boys' statements to the police.
The preliminary post-mortem report had established that the boy drowned. An action committee had staged a march to the police station here on Tuesday seeking a comprehensive probe in the case.
The Left Democratic Front has called for a day-long hartal in the coastal belt falling under the Kanhangad municipality on Thursday in protest against the student's death.
