LS polls: Four former State CMs among 28 file nomination papers

March 21, 2014

Bangalore, Mar 21: The second day of filing nominations for the April 17 Lok Sabha polls in the State witnessed four former chief ministers – M?Veerappa Moily, N?Dharam Singh (both Congress), B?S?Yeddyurappa and D?V?Sadananda Gowda (both BJP) – filing their nomination papers. In all, 28 candidates, including six sitting MPs, filed their papers on Thursday.

While Moily, Singh and Gowda have already won parliamentary elections previously, Yeddyurappa is testing his fortunes in national politics for the first time.

It was a show of unity in the BJP in Bangalore, when Gowda along with his supporters arrived to file his papers for Bangalore North seat at the Deputy Commissioner 's office. Gowda was accompanied by senior leaders H?N?Ananth?Kumar, R Ashoka (both had, at one time, opposed Gowda 's candidature) and also the three BJP?MLAs who represent the Assembly segments coming under the constituency. Gowda is pitted against former MP C?Narayanaswamy of the Congress, who secured the seat by winning the party primary.

Union Petroleum Minister M?Veerappa Moily filed his nomination for the Chikkaballapur seat, where he is expected to face a keen contest from former minister B?N?Bachegowda of the BJP, who has considerable clout in several pockets of the constituency.

Up north, N?Dharam?Singh filed his nomination papers for Bidar, from where he is seeking re-election. Singh defeated Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli in the 2009 polls by a margin of 38,000 votes. This time, the BJP is yet to decide whether to give the ticket to Nagamarapalli or his son Suryakanth. Former minister Bandeppa Kashempur is the JD(S) candidate.

Shimoga has emerged to be a keenly watched constituency with a triangular fight among B?S?Yeddyurappa, Geetha Shivarajkumar and Manjunath Bhandary on the cards. Yeddyurappa filed his nomination paper with a large number of supporters in tow.

Other prominent candidates who filed their nominations include Railway Minister M?Mallikarjun Kharge (Gulbarga), sitting MPs Anantkumar Hegde (Uttara Kannada), G?M?Siddeshwara (Davangere) and Nalin Kumar Katil (Dakshina Kannada).

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.
