Puttur, Feb 17: In a district like Dakshina Kannada which was earlier known for its communal harmony, the recent spate of communal clashes and provocative acts has left in its wake not merely a tarnished image of the district but also caution, bitterness and wounded feelings among locals belonging to different communities.
Not just this, the regular bouts of communal tension erupting in various parts of the coastal region have also left behind questions on the possibility of gaining back the communal harmony that was once an integral part of Dakshina Kannada.
In such a scenario, an example of willingness to extend a helping hand beyond the barrier of religion has emerged at a madrasa in Puttur taluk where pilgrims set out on a pilgrimage to Dharmasthala on foot were provided with shelter and accommodation overnight.
When a group of pilgrims from Kodagu reached Sunkadakatte near Kadaba on foot during their return journey after their pilgrimage to Dharmasthala and Subrahmanya holy centres, it grew dark. Since they were unable to continue their journey as the night grew late, the committee members at Darul Islam Madrasa in Sunkadakatte decided to offer shelter to the group of pilgrims to halt overnight before they could resume their journey the next day.
Responding to the request of the pilgrims, Jamaat committee president of Mohiuddin Jumma Masjid at Sunkadakatte and other committee members obliged and offered shelter to the pilgrims at the madrasa during the night.
Such an example of humaneness overlooking religious barriers goes a long way towards preserving the harmony and peace among the locals in this part of the district prone to communally-provocative deeds by miscreants.
