Belagavi, Jul17: Upset over not getting a fair price for their produce, a group of farmers from Maharashtra tried to drain around 25,000 litres of milk from three milk tankers from the Belagavi KMF plant in Karnataka.
The agitating farmers were waiting near Chandagarh on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border on Monday night. They stopped the tankers and tried to empty them.
This is part of the strike by milk farmers led by Swabhimani Shetkari Saghtana. Farmers opened valves of the tankers and emptied milk on the streets.
Later, a convoy of the Maharashtra police escorted the tankers to their destinations, with whatever milk that was remaining.
Belagavi SP Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that officers were deployed at borders, and vehicles were given protection.
Maharashtra police have assured escorts to the milk tankers, Mr. Reddy said.
