Malaria kills 10-year-old girl from Belthangady

Mangalore, Jan 9: A 10-year-old girl from Belthangady taluk died due to malaria in the Regional Advanced Paediatric Care Centre (RAPCC) on Tuesday

The victim is ideitified as Harinakshi, daughter of Taniya Mugera and Baby from Shishila village.

District surveillance officer Dr Rajesh BV confirmed the death.

He said her eight-year-old brother, Ajith, who also has malaria, is on a ventilator and his condition is critical. They were brought together to RAPCC. He said, the girl had visited Bangalore for a school trip and she may have contracted malaria there.

He said a team including him went on Sunday to the home of the deceased. He said everything at the residence was dry and there was no stagnating water found. Fogging and surveillance of the area for people with fever was done. There is a stream near the home but it has flowing water. The house is in a very remote area and the family is poor.

He said it is the first death due to malaria in 2014.

The children were brought to the primary health centre (PHC) in Kokkada with vomiting and jaundice. At the PHC, the doctor advised both the children to be sent to RAPCC in Mangalore. It takes two weeks for a mosquito bite to materialise into fever. Fifteen days ago, the girl had fever for which she was taken to a local doctor. Then, after 15 to 20 days, they went to the PHC.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
