Man gets life sentence nearly 2 decades after murdering second wife

Mangaluru, Sep 18: Nearly two decades after he murdered his second wife at Pudu village in Bantwal on the outskirts of the city, a native of Tamil Nadu has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the first additional district and session's court, here.

While pronouncing the verdict on Saturday, judge C M Joshi also directed the convict Raju aka Raja, a trader of fighting hens from Coimbatore, to pay a fine of Rs 3,000. Raju, who was on the run for several years, after murdering his second wife Devi, 25 on July 22, 1997. On Friday, the court found him guilty of all charges.

Raju procured hens used in cock fights from Tamil Nadu and sold it in Bantwal. He was working with his brother, who was living with his wife in Padu village for over two decades. Raju lived separately in a rented house with his wife Devi.

Police said on the ill-fated day, Raju hacked Devi to death around 1am. Mohan, his neighbour who heard Devi's screams came out of his house to check. Raju parried his inquisitive neighbour's queries stating Devi was in the habit of shouting at night.

Raju later locked the house around 2 am and left in an autorickshaw, which he regularly hired. Next morning, Mohan entered Raju's house through a window and found Devi lying in a pool of blood.

M Shekarappa, then police inspector registered a case of murder and filed a chargesheet few weeks later, even as efforts were on to nab Raju. DK district police notified Raju as a proclaimed offender as he remained on the run for long.

A team of district crime information bureau sleuths arrested Raju from his house in Mulanur village, in Tirupur district on September 5, 2014. As the trial progressed, four witnesses had died and others could not depose due to health issues.

Melkar, Dec 17: The 17th Annual Day and Graduation Ceremony of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, themed “Fusion-2K25,” was celebrated with dignity and enthusiasm, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. The annual report was presented by the Principal, Mr. Abdul Majeed S, highlighting the institution’s academic progress, notable achievements, and extracurricular accomplishments during the academic year.

The presidential address was delivered by the esteemed Chairman of Melkar Women’s PU and Degree College, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasized the vital role of education in empowering women and shaping responsible citizens. The graduation ceremony was a proud moment for the outgoing students as they were formally conferred degrees and wished success in their future endeavours.

Ms. Mashmooma Fathima served as the Master of Ceremonies. The welcome address was delivered by Ms. Fathima Nida, and the programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Ayisha Suhana.
