Kasaragod, Oct 28: The district police have cracked a six year old “missing” case and converted it into a “murder” case as the disappeared man’s wife finally confessed that she had killed him along with her son and paramour.

The police on Saturday arrested Sakeena (35), her paramour N A Ummer (41) of Bovikanam, and Sakeena’s 16-year-old son for the murder of Muhammed Kunhi (32) of Star Nagar in Mogral Puthur in Kasaragod district. Ummer already has three wives.

District police chief A Srinivas said that Kunhi, who was were wealthy person, was murdered between March 5 and March 30, 2012. The wife and paramour killed Kunhi to usurp his land, he said.

Police found the two had sold three plots of Kunhi and pocketed the money. On August 6, 2012, Kunhi’s relative Mohammed Shafi filed a man missing case in Kasargod town police. Subsequently, he also filed a habeas corpus in Kerala High Court.

In December, 12, 2012, the High Court ordered the constitution of a special team to probe the case. In April 2014, the special team handed over the case to Kasargod District Crime Records Bureau.

The case lied idle since then till DySP K Jaison Abraham took over as the head of the DCRB. Police said his investigation gave leads that the wife was involved in the missing of Kunhi. On hindsight, her statement to the police then was also riddled with contradiction, said officers.

Later, Sakeena and Ummer were questioned and they admitted to killing Muhammed Kunhi, said Srinivas. They made a noose out of a shawl and strangled Kunhi while he was asleep, he said.

The next night, they disposed the body in the nearby river. Sakeena’s 16-year-old son too helped them to dispose of the body.

A day after he was killed, Sakeena moved out of the house to another locality. Police said Ummer was an ex-convict, who served time for theft.
