Mangaluru, Feb 13: A 45-year-old labourer who died after being hit by a bullet when he had gone to catch fish in the night at a remote place in Sullia taluk, was in fact a victim of mistaken of identity, according to police.
Superintendent of Police Dr S D Sharanappa on Saturday told media persons that Jayaram Naik was shot by a hunter on February 9 after being mistaken for a wild boar.
Jayaram Naika, his younger brother Harish Naik and three others-Harish Patrakodi, Deekshith and Venugopal-were walking near a stream at Chaipe in Thodikana when the incident took place.
During the investigation, the police have arrested CK Ramachandra Naik and Vishwanath Naik of Kudrepaya in Kodagu district at Koinadu in Sampaje. The duo had gone for hunting on the day of the incident.
Thinking that it was a wild boar, Ramachandra Naik fired at Jayaram Naik. The single barrel breech loading gun was used for firing. The license for the gun was possessed by Vishwanath Naik. The police have seized gun, rounds, torchlight and clothes from the arrested.
The team that cracked the case included Addittional Superintendent of Police Vincent Shanthakumar, Puttur ASP C B Ryshyanth, IPS Probationary Assistant Police Superintendent Lakshman Nimbargi, Sullia Circle Inspector Sathish B S. The team will be given cash prize and letter of appreciation.
