A gold bar and two gold biscuits worth Rs 31 lakhs was recovered by the team after noticing suspicious activity inside a washroom at the airport on Tuesday.
The racket came to light when it was noticed that one of the cleaning staff at the airport stealthily took out a gold bar and two gold biscuits from inside the drain cover in the washroom, following which he was taken for questioning.
The cleaning staff has been identified as 22-year-old Ganesh from Kenjar at Bajpe.
Upon interrogation, Ganesh revealed that he had been instructed to retrieve the gold concealed inside the drain after a passenger alighting at the airport from Dubai on Tuesday had hidden it there.
As per the instructions, Ganesh was to hand over the retrieved gold to an accomplice waiting at the parking area at the airport.
The accomplice, Naushad from BC Road, who had been waiting at the pre-planned spot to collect the gold, was taken into custody by the DRI team.
It came to light that the smuggling was part of a major gold smuggling racket between Dubai, UAE and Kozhikode in Kerala.
The DRI sleuths are conducting further investigation to uncover rest of the members involved in the smuggling racket.
