Mangalore, Apr 9: To boost the polling percentage of Dakshina Kannada district which stands at 13th position in the state, the Systematic Voters ' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) committee in the district will take up various awareness programmes such as a beach run programme to promote the significance of voting, said Zilla Panchayat CEO and SVEEP committee president Tulasi Maddineni.

Addressing mediapersons on Wednesday, she said that although was no much difference in the voting percentage in Dakshina Kannada in the parliamentary elections (2009) and assembly elections (2013), the district had slipped from the first position to the 13th position in the state. With pressure being high on the district administration to regain its earlier status, efforts are being made to create awareness among voters to exercise their votes, she said.

The poll percentage in parliamentary elections of 2009 was 74.46, while the total turnout was 74.78 percent in 2103 assembly elections. However, the change in position has been due to an increase in the polling percentages of districts such as Kolar, Chikballapur and Tumkur, which witnessed an increase of upto 15 percent, she said.

She said that the beach promotion programme would be organised on April 13 at Panambur beach to create awareness among voters, which includes a sand sculpture-making competition.

A Cessna aircraft will also be deployed in Mangalore from April 13 to 20, to take the enthusiast voters on short rides around the city. The joy ride of 20 minutes in the four-seater aircraft will be charged at Rs 2,500 per person, while a discount of Rs 500 will be offered if he/she assures of voting (or shows the indelible ink mark after the polling day).

Those interested can contact Panambur Beach Tourism Authority CEO Yathish Baikampady at 9449035570.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
