Mangalore, Jul 5: After a gap of two years, the renovated Unani Hospital at Bunder has started treating patients. New doctors also have been appointed to the hospital jointly run by the Mangalore City Corporation, Department of Health and Family Welfare and Department of Ayush.

MCC Mayor Mahabala Marla and Commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde S formally inaugurated the century old hospital located on the busy Azizzuddin Road in the presence of other officials on Friday.

The reopening comes days after a visit by Minister for Health and Family Welfare U T, who directed officials to take steps to open the clinic.

With a staff strength of five, including two Unani doctors, the hospital will remain open for four days a week between 9 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.

The hospital underwent renovations costing the corporation Rs. 3.48 lakh. The flooring was changed and a new toilet complex was built, said Mr Hegde.

According to local residents the reopening of the hospital has been a demand of the residents for more than two years. Numerous people in the area relied on the hospital for treatment.

Officials there claimed that the hospital had a history of 119 years, and had been the backbone of health care in the area – especially for labourers at the docks, godowns and those suffering from chronic ailments such as rheumatoid arthritis and type II diabetes, among others.

The district officer of the Ayush Department, Sadashivananda, said that the district now had three Unani Hospitals – at Bunder, Kasba Bengre and Kerekodi near Mulki.

Officials said the hospital at Bengre, which sees nearly 30 patients every day, was facing staff shortage.
