Mangalore, Oct 23: With sanitation problems rising in the city, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to undertake a'clean and healthy Mangalore' campaign and install'e-toilets' at various locations in the city in order to keep the surroundings clean and hygienic.
If all things work as planned, there are possibilities of automatic e-toilets being bet up close to bus stands, auto-rickshaw stands and crowded areas in the city limits. State-of-the-art e-toilets are fully automatic and the MCC is contemplating their installation on a pilot basis in the city.
The MCC has held initial round of talks with Eram Scientific Solutions Pvt Ltd, a Kerala-based company which develops e-toilets, to implement the project.
Once the decision of the city corporation is finalised, the e-toilets would be installed at strategic spots in densely populated areas of the city, where people face sanitation problems at large.
The key features of e-toilets are automated access control, waste processing and portable layout designed to fit in small corners in busy cities.
The automatic e-toilets come with attractive kiosks and would be designed in a certain way to avoid wastage of water. At every flush, limited water will be used so that the wastage of water can be controlled. Moreover, there is a built-in GPS system to discourage trespassers. The door is fitted with an automatic lock which will allow only one user to enter the toilet at a time. If anyone tries to break the automatic lock, the authorities will be informed through an alarm.
To ensure smooth functioning of the toilets, they will be fitted with a water tank which will contain a certain amount of water at a time which will be utilised according to the frequency of usage.
At present, there are 400 such toilets installed and functioning in Bangalore, Kerala and Nagpur in Maharashtra.
