Mangalore: NWF national publicity campaign to be inaugurated on Friday

Mangalore, Oct 16: National Women's Front, Kerala will organise a national-level Women's Conference for Empowerment on November 16 at Coimbatore with the aim of empowering women from backward classes against the backdrop of rising number of crimes against women in the country.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, NWF national committee member Shahida Tasneem said that as a precursor to the national conference in Coimbatore, a national publicity campaign would be launched in Mangalore.

The national publicity campaign will be inaugurated at a programme on October 17 at Loyola Hall, St Aloysius College, Mangalore. The programme will be inaugurated by the national president of National Women's Front Shahida Aslam, who hails from Mangalore. State NWF president Fathima Naseema will preside over the programme, she said.

Columnist and poet Jyothi Guruprasad, Beary Sahitya Academy member Zohra Abbas, president of Catholic Sabha, Mangalore Flavia D'Souza and Shahida Tasneem will speak in the programme.

She said that women achievers in the fields of education, literature and social service would be felicitated on the occasion. Around 5,000 women and women representatives from various states are expected to participate in the national conference in Coimbatore, she said.

She added that the organisation had its regional units in eight states in the country including Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

NWF state secretary Syeda Yusuf, district president Nazeefa and district secretary Zeenath were present during the press conference.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
