Mangalore, Jun 4: Two students from the city-based Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, have developed an Android application to bridge the communication gap that exists between hearing impaired and normal individuals.

Showcasing the newly-built app in a press conference here on Wednesday, the duo said that the application provides a set of innovative functionalities, which includes the provision to convert the text into speech and speech into text, thus making it easy for the hearing impaired to communicate. The application allows quick switch between both conversation modes, said Jaseem Abbas.
He said that the app would have the facility of a simple hearing test ' which would help the user know his hearing capacity. The application also provides the user with the facility of automated messages to a set of predefined numbers (such as the police, dependents) to be sent in cases of emergency, which can be done by just shaking the device a couple of times, he said.
He added that the application was preloaded with a few videos teaching the hand gesture ' communication method for the ease of the hearing impaired user.
Dr Shrinivasa Mayya, principal of the college said that the project had bagged the first place in the state-level CSI Students Convention held at Reva Institute of Technology, Bangalore and also received a scholarship from Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Bangalore.
