Mangalore University launches M.Sc. in Geography

Mangaluru, Dec 16: A new post graduate department of Geography has been inaugurated at Mangalagangothri. Dr. P. Bore gowda IAS (Retd), inaugurated the M.Sc. Geography in an event presided over by Prof. K Byrappathe Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of the University. The event was organised by the Department of Geography, Mangalore University.

The programme started with a prayer song sung by Savitha Kumari, the Library Assistant. The coordinator of the Department Dr. Dasharatha P. Angadidelivered the welcome speech and gave a brief Introduction of the Chief Guest and the Vice Chancellor. He opined that the new Programme of Geography will be starting with a one step, which is going to be a big leap for the geographical research in the Coastal Karnataka.

The programme was inaugurated by lightning lamp by the dignitaries and by the students of geography. The chief guest of the event Dr. P Bore Gowda, delivered the key note address. He remarked “geography is the mother of sciences as all the other sciences are being enacted in thegeography'”, conveying the message of necessity of having a geography education at the PG level and he was appreciated to the Vice Chancellor.

At the following instant the students of the geography department gave their opinion about having a P.G.Department of Geography at the University. They thanked the VC and the coordinator of the department for opened up in this University. It is a first PG department of geography at the whole of coastal Karnataka.

The president of the programme Hon'ble VC of Mangalore University, Prof. K Byrappadelivering his presidential address stressed on the need of having geography education at higher level and agreed upon the idea of starting geography courses at undergraduate level in the colleges coming under the jurisdiction of the university.

He informed the audiences that soon he will call upon the principals of the various colleges and will press upon the demand to start geography subject. In conclusion he wished the new department good wishes for the coming future.

In conclusion Dr. Vishwanath delivered the vote of thanks for the dignitaries and the audiences presented over there. The programme was anchored by Miss Vinaya Kumari of Geoinformatics Programme.

Udupi, Dec 15: What was meant to be a post-pilgrimage gathering turned tragic in Padukere village of Brahmavar taluk, Udupi district, late Sunday night, when a clash among youths escalated into a fatal assault, leaving one man dead.

The victim has been identified as 30-year-old Santosh Mogaveera, a resident of Padukere.

According to preliminary information, the incident took place during a late-night drinking party involving a group of local youths who had recently returned after completing their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine. An argument reportedly broke out among the group and soon escalated into a violent confrontation.

During the ensuing brawl, Santosh Mogaveera was allegedly assaulted and collapsed at the spot after sustaining serious injuries. He was rushed by local residents to a private hospital in Brahmavar, where doctors declared him dead.

On receiving information, senior police officials, including Brahmavar Circle Inspector Gopikrishna, Kota Police Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar T, Station ASI Manthesh Jabagoudar, and head constables Pradeep and Ashok, visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Police have taken four youths into custody in connection with the incident. A case has been registered at the Kota police station, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the death.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
