Mangalore, Jun 22: Two young IT professionals based in Mangalore, Dheeraj Madi and Sripathi Pai, have developed an Android mobile application to help alert necessary people if a woman is in distress or in trouble.
Called I-Shakti ', the mobile application can be downloaded and installed on any Android mobile phone. Once installed, a person has the option of feeding three most important contact numbers in the app. When in distress or need of help, a woman has to shake the phone briskly in order to activate the app and send a distress signal to the three listed mobile numbers in the form of an SMS message.
With the help of the SMS alert, the recipients of the message can try locating the sender and this may help in protecting them.
The I-Shakti mobile app was launched at a programme in the city on Saturday, in the presence of the two developers Dheerja Madi and Sripathi Pai.
The mobile app was launched by secretary of Expert Education Foundation Ushaprabha Nayak.
Speaking at the programme, Mr Pai said that the duo had decided to build a mobile app that focused on women 's safety, concerned over rise in number of rape cases.
He said that for the full functioning of the app, the GPS had to be switched on in the victim 's mobile phone. The location of the person in distress could be traced through the GPS software in the receiver 's phone, he said.
