Mangaluru: 2 patients suspected to be infected with Nipah recuperating

Mangaluru, May 24: Two fever patients suspected to be infected with the deadly Nipah virus are slowly recuperating in different hospitals in the city, according a Health Department official.

The samples drawn from a 20-year-old woman admitted in a private hospital and a 75-year-old man being treated at the Government Wenlock Hospital had been sent to Manipal Centre for Virus Research, Manipal, and National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, for analysis.

The report is expected on Thursday, Rajesh B.V., Dakshina Kannada Surveillance Officer, said. The report of the NIV is final, he said.

“The two patients were doing very well on Wednesday and their condition is improving,” he said and added that they were being given symptomatic treatment in their respective hospitals.

Dr. Rajesh said that the woman had returned from Kozhikode, Kerala, and the other patient had not gone there in the recent past. The samples were sent for analysis after doctors observed symptoms and not ready to take any chances, he said.

Dr. Rajesh said that the Health Department here on Wednesday created a local WhatsApp group for internal communication among doctors both in private and government sectors in the district. It has members of Indian Medical Association as well. The group is for exchanging information relating to Nipah.

He said that all education institutes have been instructed to inform the Health Department of any suspected Nipah symptoms noticed among students both in schools and colleges and in hostels.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

• Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

• State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

• Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
