Mangaluru, Feb 20: Lashing against the BJP-led union government for its anti-people policy of allowing multinational companies to conduct their fishing activities in Indian waters, various units of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have demanded that the policy should be withdrawn by the union government.
Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, AAP Dakshina Kannada unit team-leader Alexander D'Souza said that the policy of the union government was a huge blow to the fishermen and their families living along the coastline. There are thousands of families along the seashore depending on fisheries for their livelihood and other traders who depend on the fishermen. Already, there has been sufficient increase in prices of fish as there is lesser catch in the previous and current year. With several problems facing the fishing community, the government is set on ruining their livelihood instead of assisting them, he said, questioning the intention behind the policy.
He said that government should extend assistance and financial help for the local fishing communities to boost the fishing sector instead of allowing foreign companies to conduct deep-sea fishing in Indian waters.
He questioned why the government was not committed to establishing cooperative societies for the fishing community similar to societies meant for farmers and growers in different states. On one side, the prime minister is giving a boost to 'Make In India' concept, but on the other side, the government led by him is taking away livelihood of fishermen by introducing such anti-people policy, he said.
The AAP units have urged the state government not to allow multinational companies to conduct fishing along the coastline of Karnataka.
AAP Dakshina Kannada treasurer Rajendra Kumar, Udupi-Chikmagalur mentor S H Gurudev, Uttar Kannada mentor Raghavendra Thane and Shimoga mentor Shridhar were present.
