Mangaluru, Mar 3: Stating that the quality of higher education in the country is a matter of concern Ajay K. Sood, president, Indian National Science Academy, Delhi, on Friday asked graduates to use knowledge to help develop society.
Delivering the 35th convocation address at Mangalore University here, he hoped that the graduates would play an integral part in creating an environment that nurtured the spirit of innovation. “Creativity should become a part of your DNA,” he said.
Mr. Sood said that the world was looking at India with admiration and expectations that Indians would contribute to solving global issues plaguing mankind such as clean energy, water remediation, clean environment and sustainable growth.
“This is certainly within our reach. Our research has to be comparable to the very best in the world, in all disciplines ranging from basic sciences, engineering to humanities,” he said.
Asking graduates to work hard to achieve their goals, he said: “You need to love what you do and you can achieve anything you set your goals on. No pain, no gain and we should continue to challenge ourselves to achieve our best potential.”
B.A. Vivek Rai, Kannada scholar and former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi and former Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysuru, was presented with honorary doctorate (Honoris Causa).
In his address, Mr. Rai said that information was not knowledge. Technology was only a tool. Extensive reading and research were required to acquire knowledge. Stressing the need for a study on social science and humanities, Mr. Rai asked graduates to learn community living by crossing the borders of caste and religion.
K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, said that the university would start five new post-graduate courses in its post-graduate centre at Chikka Aluvara in Kodagu district from the academic year 2017-18. The university would tap solar energy on the campus within the next three months for its energy needs.
