The protest comes a day after a group of five students of a city based college, who commute every day from Kerala in train were targeted by dozens of miscreants at the Railway Station on Friday for the second time in two weeks.

Some of the students have sustained severe injuries in the unprovoked attack and they have been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru.

The protesters, who gathered in the premises of the Railway Station on Saturday raised slogans against the communal attacks and demanded the arrest of the assailants.

Within a few minutes a team of police from Mangaluru South Police Station rushed to the spot and detained the protesters. However, all of them were released after being taken to the station.

Irshad Bajpe, Dakshina Kannada district present of CFI, who was also among those who detained, told Coastaldigest.com that before releasing the protesters police had assured to nab all the culprits and take action against them.

Meanwhile police sources said that they have already arrested one of the accused in connection with Friday’s assault on the students. Other accused including Nikhil and Yogesh will be arrested soon, they said.

Following the assurance from the police, the students withdrew their protest, said Mr Bajpe. Fayaz Manjanady, Nizam, Naufal were among the protesters.
