Mangaluru, Jun 4: The intervention by the Coast Guard helped the timely medical evacuation of a Chinese sailor who fell ill on board ship ‘MV Tao Brave’ which was sailing towards Dahej port in Gujarat from Australia.
The Coast Guard put its ship ‘Kasturba Gandhi,’ that was 26 nautical miles away from the merchant vessel, on standby, to respond to any exigency.
The local agents of the vessel, on receipt of information from the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Mumbai at 2.45pm liaised and established communication with Customs, port and local police on the matter.
Sailor Dong Xiaoxuan, second engineer on board the merchant vessel, suffered from symptoms of paralysis including subdued facial expression on the left side of his face and pendulous on the left eyelid and corners of the mouth. The agent hired a tug to get Xiaoxuan, and brought him to New Mangalore Port.
