Mangaluru, Nov 10: The youngster from Mangaluru who recently gained fame and popularity thanks to his beloved steed, now grieves over the one he could not ride.
Months ago, Sikander' stole hearts among youth and citizens of Mangaluru, when news spread about a college student riding a horse on most days to attend his classes in roshni Nilaya. Avinand Achanahally, a postgraduate student of Roshni Nilaya School of Social Work, would ride his domesticated stallion to commute from home to college and back, instead of the usual moped or motorcycle.
Fond of horses since his childhood, Avinand Achanahally, recently acquired a white mare from an equine market in Maharashtra, which he was bringing back to his hometown in Hassan district. However, getting a sudden infection along the journey home, the mare breathed its last this weekend.
Avinand, who had just bought the mare on Thursday, is now heartbroken over his loss. His dream of riding a white mare remains unfulfilled with the demise of the four-year-old equine.
After the long journey to his hometown Hanbal from Maharashtra, it is said that the mare developed a gastrointestinal infection which was the cause of sudden death of the mare. Even the efforts of a veterinarian could not save the horse.
Sadly, Avinand had not yet mounted his newly-acquired mare which he purchased it in Maharashtra for a sum of Rs 1 lakh, and the new saddle remains unused. According to him, the 22-hour long journey may have proved hard on the mare, resulting in the infection in the domesticated animal.
Before purchasing the new mare, Avinand had left Sikander with Jangli Saheb, from whom he had bought it in Mysuru. “I will take a call on Sikander in December when I return to college after my holidays,'' he says.
