Mangaluru, Dec 11: The police department will keep an eye on those spreading false rumours and provoking innocent citizens. Speaking to media persons he said that those who took the law in their hands would be registered as rowdy-sheeters and booked under Goonda Act. No person has the opportunity to take the law in their own hands. People should refrain from doing so, he said.

He said that the department has been instructed to take stringent action against miscreants in the clashes that had occurring over the past week.

Shortage of police personnel

With manifestation of acute shortage of police personnel in Dakshina Kannada, the department has requested for 323 additional personnel to be deputed in the district. There are only 527 personnel for the population of 10 lakh citizens in the district, which is extremely fewer for regions where there is increase in crime level, he said, adding that the police staff were putting all their efforts in tackling crime in the district.

Mr Sharanappa said that a total of 67 CCTV cameras had been set up in 18 centres and five police stations. Ujire and surrounding areas being a sensitive region, it is being debated to set up a CCTV camera in Ujire police station as well, he informed.

With only 36 police personnel working at Belthangady police station, the count of cases has gone up to 460, including 99 cases of unnatural deaths. In this regard, efforts are being made to upgrade Dharmasthala police station with the possible deployment of additional 10 police personnel. An additional 80 personnel will be called for special arrangements when required, he briefed.

Intelligence Input

Meanwhile Mangaluru City Police Commissioner R Hithendra said that certain groups were trying to disturb the peace in the city by attacking persons and instigating communal hatred. The police are prepared to tackle such incidents firmly and book those involved in such acts, he said.

œThere were intelligence inputs about certain groups trying to attack people from a certain community and create a sense of hatred among the community members towards the government, he said adding that the police are well-prepared to deal with such attacks with an iron hand.

He said that orders have been issued asking each police station to hold peace committee meetings in their areas and resolve the issues. He said the police were checking vehicles at various points in the city, as stolen vehicles were being used by those involved in the incidents reported after last Friday's group clashes, he said.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
