Mangaluru continues to reel under heat despite rain spell

Mangaluru, Mar 30: The city of Mangaluru continued to reel under heat as temperature soared across the coastal Karnataka , even as thunderstorm and rains lashed some areas.

Heavy rain coupled with thunder and lightning lashed Mangalur in the wee hours of Monday. However, sweltering heat conditions prevailed in the morning.

On Sunday Dharmasthala in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district recorded maximum rainfall of 16mm in Karnataka. At the same time Belthangady hobli in Belthangady taluk recorded maximum temperature of 40.6°C on March 28 at 2pm.

Last week Mangaluru city with maximum temperature shooting to 37.5 degrees Celsius, the second highest temperature recorded since 2005 for the February month.

The all-time record for February month has been 38.2 degrees Celsius which was recorded in February 28, 2012. The next highest is at 37.4 degrees Celsius on February 14, 2013, making today the second hottest day in the last 10 years.

IMD Bangalore director B Puttanna said: This is the only time coast overtakes Gulbarga as far as temperature is concerned due to prevailing wind conditions and absence of cooling sea breeze, this being the end of winter season. When real summer starts in April and May months, the temperatures will be less here than North Karnataka region as wind direction changes, he added.

Karnataka for period from March 23 to March 29 recorded deficit rainfall of 81%. Against normal weighted average rainfall of 2.5mm in south-interior, north-interior, malnad and coastal parts, state recorded rainfall of 0.5mm. For 24-hours period ending 8.30am on March 29, four geographical regions received 0mm actual weighted average rainfall against normal weighted average rainfall of 0.5mm, a 92% deficit departure from the weighted-average normal.

Melkar (Bantwal): The 9th Annual Day celebration of SMR Public School, titled “EXCELLENTIA”, was held on December 15 with great enthusiasm and dignity, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s journey towards academic excellence and holistic development.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. U. T. Iftikar Ali. The chief guests were Dr. Akhtar Hussain, Mr. P. Moosabba Beary, Mr. Zakaria Jokattre, and Dr. T. M. Abdul Rahuf—whose inspiring addresses motivated the students and appreciated the school’s contributions to education.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, Mr. Ibrahim Gadiyar, Mr. Razak Golthamajal, Mr. Sali Koya, Mr. Arshad Hussain, Mr. Ismail Balanoor, Mr. Feroz Bawa, Mr. Sahul Hameed, Mr. Abubakkar, Mr. Hameed K. Mani, Mr. Abdul Majeed (Principal, Melkar Women’s College), and Mr. Abdul Lathief (Former Principal, Melkar Women’s College) were the guests of honour.

The Annual Report was presented by the Headmistress, Ms. Fathimathul Zaheera, highlighting the school’s achievements and progress during the academic year. The Presidential Address was delivered by the Chairman of SMR Public School, Dr. Haji S. M. Rasheed, who emphasised the vital role of education in shaping students’ futures and stressed the importance of discipline, dedication, and consistent effort in achieving 100 per cent academic results.

Secretary of SMR Public School, Mr. Rifath Ahmed, and PTA President, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, were also present on the occasion.

The Annual Day celebration showcased the collective efforts of students and teachers and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to quality education and all-round development. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, parents, and well-wishers for their support. The 9th Annual Day—EXCELLENTIA—was a memorable and successful event, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
