Mangaluru, Jan 6: At the monthly SC/ST grievance meeting held at the office of Superintendent of Police here on Tuesday, few Dalit leaders raised complaints over the behaviour of a police sub-inspector. Dalit leader S P Anand said that the sub-inspector used abusive language towards a Dalit and had not taken action or responded to the complaint made by him.

Meanwhile, few others in the meeting came to the support of the officer and rubbished the claims made by Mr Anand stating that the police officer had helped several Dalits in the past. Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa said that the issue would be verified.

Mr Anand also urged that the SP of Civil Rights Enforcement Cell, officials of Dr B R Ambedkar Development Corporation and social welfare department should also be present at SC/ST grievance meets.

Another Dalit activist asked the police to take action against auto-rickshaw drivers who took more children than the permitted number in their vehicles.

In response to a question regarding safety of children going to schools in auto-rickshaws, Mr Sharanappa said that the district police was coming up with a comprehensive child safety plan that will cover safe travel of children to schools and safety measures in the school premises.

Charmadi Ghat

Mr Sharanappa said that all measures were in place at Charmadi Ghat road to ensure smooth flow of traffic after vehicular movement was banned on Shiradi Ghat route.

œAll departments are working in coordination to ensure smooth flow of traffic on Charmadi Ghat, which is an alternative route on Mangaluru Bengaluru route, he said.
