Udupi, Feb 7: A police team from Mangaluru seized about 1.3 kilogram of opium worth Rs 5.2 lakh, which was meant for sale, near the seashore at Kaup in Udupi district and arrested one person in this regard.

Upon receiving a tip-off on the sale of opium at Kaup beach, a team of Mangaluru CID police laid a trap on Friday to arrest the persons involved. At around 1.45 p.m. that day, the police team nabbed Kaluram along with the opium found in his possession. The police also seized a mobile phone from the arrested along with Rs 490 in cash.
During interrogation, the accused is said to have revealed that he had procured the opium from Rajasthan. For further questioning, he was handed over to Kaup police station.
With an active network of drug peddlers targeting youth and students, there was an apparent rise in sale of drugs in Kaup limits.
Personnel from Mangaluru CID police team DySP Rajan Nayak, inspector Diwakar M, Ashok, Yuvaraj, Subramanya and Naveen Kumar participated in the investigation and arrest.
