Mangaluru: Eastern Blues emerge UPL-2017 champions

Mangaluru, Apr 24: Saudi Arabia based Eastern Blues cricket team emerged champions of the second season of the SAB Udupi Premiere League T10 hard tennis ball cricket tournament that concluded last night at Dr Ambedkar stadium in Panambur. They defeated Yash Bisiya Lions Oman team by eight wickets.

As many as 20 teams that participated in the tournament took with them memories of the coastal city of Namma Mangaluru.

"Cricket is not just a game. It’s something more... A game that binds people across the borders. I believe it's a confluence of many cultures and UPL has delivered to its best,” says Sallahuddin Salman, chairman of SAB and its associate companies, who is also the icon behind the UPL T10.

“Cricket in this part of the region is popular and we must thank Udupi cricket club for having given us an opportunity to witness world class cricket. It’s always a joy to watch cricket and despite the big premier leagues, visitors coming in large numbers to see the game shows the popularity of T10 cricket,” he said.

Sadhiq Kaup, president of UPL T10 season 2, said: “It's a dream come true for all of us. Each member of the team has worked hard and made this happen. Every member must be remembered on this occasion and next year we are sure we will make this bigger and better. My aim is to popularize the game and give platform to budding talent and UCC has been doing this.”

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
