Mangaluru: Five arrested for peddling cocaine; 3 cars, cash seized

Mangaluru, Aug 18: Central Crime Branch sleuths of Mangaluru city police have arrested five persons allegedly involved in selling cocaine.

The police have seized nine grams of cocaine, worth around Rs. 50,000, Rs 1.02 lakh in cash, three cars and seven mobile phones from them.

The accused have been identified as Vijesh Kumar, 34, of Manjeshwar, Nitin, 35, of Narimogaru in Puttur, Santosh Kumar, 36, of Bejai, Sandeep Kumar, 34, of Bondel and Rahul, 26, of Bikarnakatte. All of them were arrested on Friday.

The accused allegedly procured cocaine from their contacts in Goa and attempted to sell to some of their regular customers in the city, the police said.

The police said that they are searching for other members of the group allegedly involved in the trade. They are also on the lookout for those who bought the drug.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.
