Mangaluru, Jul 10: Farmer Karnataka Higher Education Minister B A Mohideen, who passed away today morning in Bengaluru, was laid to rest with full state honours amidst tears and prayers in his native village Bajpe on the outskirts of Mangaluru after Isha prayers.

81-year-old politician had been suffering from age related illness. Recently, he was taken to Bengaluru and admitted to the M S Ramaiah Hospital where he breathed his last around 6 am today.

The body was kept in a residence in Bengaluru for a brief period in the morning wherein chief minister H D Kumaraswamy, former chief minister Siddaramaiah among others paid their homage. Later it was taken in a special ambulance, which reached Bajpe at around 5 p.m.

Thousands of people including his family members, fans, well-wishers and local residents, apart from a host of political, social and religious leaders, thronged his house at Muranagara in Bajpe to see the departed leader’s face for the last time. The final rites were conducted at the graveyard near the Eidgah Juma Masjid at Bajpe.

Among the leaders who attended the funeral were Karnataka Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar, Urban Development Minister U T Khader, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Rajya Sabha Member Oscar Farnandes, DK Deputy Commissioner Sesikanth Senthil and MLC Ivan D’Souza.

He was also a Member of the Legislative Council from 1990 to 2002 and was the Chief Whip in the Legislative Council from 1994 to 1995.

He later went on to become the Minister for Higher Education and Industry under Chief Minister JH Patil from 1995 to 1999 and was recognised by the state government for his service as an honest, upright statesman with the Devaraj Urs award in 2016.

"In his sad demise we have lost a  veteran leader. We remember him as one among the close companions of Devaraja Urs," read a statement from CM Kumaraswamy.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Bengaluru, Nov 26: Karnataka is taking its first concrete steps towards lifting a three-decade-old ban on student elections in colleges and universities. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced Wednesday that the state government will form a small committee to study the reintroduction of campus polls, a practice halted in 1989 following incidents of violence.

Speaking at a 'Constitution Day' event organised by the Karnataka Congress, Mr. Shivakumar underscored the move's aim: nurturing new political leadership from the grassroots.

"Recently, (Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha) Rahul Gandhi wrote a letter to me and Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) asking us to think about restarting student elections," Shivakumar stated. "I'm announcing today that we'll form a small committee and seek a report on this."

Student elections were banned in Karnataka in 1989, largely due to concerns over violence and the infiltration of political party affiliates into campus life. The ban effectively extinguished vibrant student bodies and the pipeline of young leaders they often produced.

Mr. Shivakumar, who also serves as the Karnataka Congress president, said that former student leaders will be consulted to "study the pros and cons" of the re-introduction.

Acknowledging the history of the ban, he added, "There were many criminal activities taking place back then. We’ll see how we can conduct (student) elections by regulating such criminal activities."

The Deputy CM reminisced about his own journey, which began on campus. He recalled his political activism at Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya College leading to his first Assembly ticket in 1985 at the age of 23. "That's how student leadership was at the time. Such leadership has gone today. College elections have stopped," he lamented, adding that for many, college elections were "like a big movement" where leaders were forged.

The move, driven by the Congress high command's push to cultivate young talent, will face scrutiny from academics and university authorities who have, in the past, expressed concern that the return of polls could disrupt the peaceful academic environment and turn campuses into political battlegrounds.

Mangaluru: Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H has warned of strict action against individuals spreading rumours and attempting to create insecurity within the Muslim community and fuel hatred between Hindus and Muslims through social media.

Referring to a recent social media post alleging that police personnel had entered a masjid premises to check whether beef was being cooked, the commissioner said miscreants were attempting to push their communal agenda.

“A group of people, both from Mangaluru and abroad, are trying hard to spread rumours. For the past 10 days, they have been attempting to rake up old issues, highlight routine matters as controversies, or fabricate news altogether,” he said.

He reiterated that any such attempts to disturb communal harmony would invite legal action. “Cases will be registered and the accused will be brought to book,” he stated.
