The Principal District and Sessions Court Judge Uma M.G. on Friday found Sabanna Chalavadi guilty under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code. She will pronounce the quantum of punishment on March 11.

The incident pertains to death of Pushpa, 25, who died due to burns in her house at Malemar near Derebail on May 27, 2012. The accused is Sabanna, resident of Bagalkote, who married Pushpa, also a resident of Bagalkote, according to the chargesheet that police filed.

The duo were living in a rented accommodation at Malemar. Sabanna frequently quarreled with Pushpa suspecting her fidelity. On May the fateful day, Sabanna had one such fight with Pushpa, who threatened to end her life if he continued with such behaviour.

The chargesheet said Pushpa poured kerosene on herself around noon and set herself ablaze. She was shifted to a private hospital near Kuntikana junction with 55% burns. And succumbed to them six days later.

Before her death, Pushpa in her statement to the police recounted the harassment by her husband and the frequent quarrels they had. The doctors treating Pushpa certified that she was in a good mental state to give her statement after which police recorded her statement.

During the trial, senior public prosecutor Pushparaja Adyanthaya dwelt on this very dying declaration. He cited evidence of doctor who treated Pushpa and the head constable, who recorded her statement.

Strangely, Pushpa's parents, her brother and other relatives turned hostile before the court. Sabanna faces prospect imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 20: City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy has issued a high-alert warning to vehicle owners regarding a surge in cyber fraud targeting those looking to pay traffic violation fines. Fraudsters are reportedly exploiting recent government discount schemes on traffic penalties to deceive citizens.

The Scam: How Fraudsters Strike

Criminals are using SMS, WhatsApp, and social media to circulate suspicious links and APK files (Android application packages). They claim these apps allow users to pay e-challans at a discount.

•    Device Hacking: Downloading these unauthorized apps gives hackers full access to the victim's smartphone.

•    Financial Theft: Once the phone is compromised, fraudsters intercept OTPs and personal data to drain bank accounts.

•    Phishing Sites: Fake websites mimicking official portals are also being used to harvest banking credentials.

Already, two residents within Mangaluru city limits have reported significant financial losses after falling victim to these fraudulent apps.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
