Mangaluru, Dec 24: A 44-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the second additional district and sessions court which found him guilty of murder and dowry harassment.

Rani while being treated gave a statement to Kavoor police accusing Raja of dowry harassment and torture. Raja was arrested and a chargesheet under sections 302 (murder) and 498 (a) (Dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code was filed against him. Public prosecutors Shivaprasad Alva and B Shekar Shetty administered evidence of witnesses before the session court judge.
Prime witnesses were the neighbours of the couple, who had complained of public nuisance by Raja in the area in June 2010. Police incidentally had summoned Raja to the station and warned him. These very neighbours shifted a badly burnt Rani to the hospital.
Deeming Rani's statement as dying declaration and also evidence of Raja's neighbours, judge Sarvodaya Shettigar convicted Raja for offences he was charged with.
Apart from sentencing Raja to life, the judge directed him to pay a fine of Rs 30,000. For the offence of dowry death, the judge directed him to undergo a year's imprisonment and pay fine of Rs 20,000. Both the sentences will run concurrently.
If Raja pays the entire fine amount of Rs 50,000, it should be paid to the children - Kiran and Devika. He also directed district legal services authority to pay compensation to the children under Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
