Mangaluru, Feb 9: Rubbishing the allegation of irregularities in denotification of BDA land meant for Arkavathi layout and violating court orders in the recent controversy against the Siddaramaiah government, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief Dr G Parameshwara on Monday reiterated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had neither taken an illegal decision nor violated court orders with regard to the denotification of land.

Responding to queries from media persons at a press conference here on Monday, he said that necessary action could be initiated against the chief minister if the decision he had taken could be proved as illegal. If it is clear that the CM has taken a decision against the court orders, then the opposition has the chance to approach organisations such as the Lokayukta to initiate an inquiry against him, he informed.

Membership drive

Dr Parameshwara said that he was touring all districts of the state to review the ongoing booth-level Congress membership drive in the state and sort out minor glitches in the registration process. Almost 60 percent of registration process has been completed in all districts in the state, and the party has been notified to finish the entire process by February 15, he said, adding that he had toured 10 districts so far.

He added that a data-bank would be created to compile and collaborate details of the new party members into a single database that would prove useful during elections and while making consequential decisions in the party.

The KPCC chief said that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with senior Congress leaders to discuss conducting organisational elections in the party at block levels and four states including Karnataka, Kerala and Orissa had been chosen as pilot states to enable the organisational election process at booth level.

“He (Rahul Gandhi) also discussed the need to revise the Congress ideologies, the objective of socio-economic upliftment and the need to restructure the organisation and took the collective opinion in the meeting,” he informed.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
