Mangaluru, Dec 1: A labourer was buried alive under the rubble after a landslip at the road under bridge construction site at the Padil-Bajal railway level crossing near Mangaluru Junction Railway Station in the city on Monday night.
The deceased has been identified as Mangal (25) from north India. The tragedy occurred when the workers Mangal and other workers were engaged in fastening lengthy iron roads.
According to local sources, at least three workers were trapped under the rubble when the landslip occurred.
While two of them managed to rescue themselves with the help of others Mangal got trapped under iron roads and could not get up.
As the news began to spread a group of local residents rushed to the spot and tried to rescue Mangal. Meanwhile, fire personnel and police also reached the spot and launched formal rescue operation.
However, Mangal succumbed to his injuries under the rubble and rescue workers could retrieve only his dead body after a prolonged effort.
The construction work had commenced in October, almost two months after then Railway Minister D V Sadananda Gowda laid foundation stone for the bridge.
