Mangaluru, Dec 4: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of BJP Mahila Morcha staged a Jail Bharo programme on Thursday by blocking the movement of traffic at A B Shetty circle in the city.
Over 200 members of the Mahila Morcha were taken into custody by the police for blocking the movement of vehicles at the traffic junction as a mark of protest against the Congress government's inefficiency to tackle the growing number of rapes and crimes against women and children in the state.
The protestors shouted slogans against the state government, chief minister Siddaramaiah and home minister KJ George for failing to provide security to women in the state.
Prior to the blockade, the protestors undertook a protest march from the clock tower to A B Shetty circle, which was inaugurated by Mahila Morcha district president Mallika Prasad.
Addressing the protestors, State BJP Mahila Morcha vice president Sulochana Bhat complained that neither the chief minister nor the home minister showed any concern for the safety of women and children in the state.
The Congress-led state government is incapable of providing security to women. Although it had promised establishment of fast-track courts, rehabilitation and counselling centres for rape victims, it has failed to do so, she said, demanding counselling centres and rehabilitation measures for victims of sexual assault, she said.
She also demanded swift and stringent punishment for rapists.
BJP district president Pratap Simha Nayak and member of Mahila Morcha Pulasya Rai also spoke on the occasion.
The protestors also condemned the statement made by CM Siddaramaiah that television channels repeatedly highlighted incidents of sexual assault in their telecasts to increase their TRP.
Members of district BJP unit and Kodagu BJP unit also took part in the protest.
